THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM and THE EYFS The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) is the curriculum that is followed by the children in Nursery and Reception (also known as FS1 and FS2) - the curriculum is broken up into 6 main areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication, Language and Literacy; Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development and Creative Development. All the National Curriculum subjects are taught: Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Design Technology, Information Technology, History, Geography, Art, Music and PE. Religious Education is also provided. Each subject is planned initially at a whole school level to ensure that the children's knowledge and skills are extended as they progress through the school. Teachers in the same year group then plan together in detail to ensure that parallel classes are covering the same areas. The curriculum is divided into core subjects (Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Information and Communication Technology) and foundation subjects (History, geography, Music, Art, Design Technology, Religious Education, Physical Education). All subjects are taught throughout the year. EARLY YEARS Children in the Nursery and Reception Classes cover twelve topics during the two years. These include topics on Ourselves, Festivals, Colour, People Who Help Us, New Life and Growth etc. The concepts and skills are introduced through activities in the Nursery but they are revisited in the Reception Classes, making more explicit links with National Curriculum requirements. Children come to school with widely differing experiences. Some arrive reading, others are less sure of themselves. We aim to develop each child from whatever starting point he or she is at. Their teachers closely observe nursery children and all new entrants to the Reception Classes as we aim to identify any potential learning difficulties from an early age.
